\nThe return is likely to make plenty of Costco members happy, particularly home bakers who had grown accustomed to the warehouse club\u2018s private-label chocolate chips.\u00a0

\nIn fact, recent sightings of the familiar red Kirkland bags have already sparked excitement among Costco shoppers online.
\n\u201cThis is the best news!\u201d one enthusiastic Reddit user wrote after learning that the product is now back in stock.
\nThe 4.5-pound bags are priced at $11.99 to nearly $14, depending on location, marking a notable increase from when they were last available. Fox Business reports that the same item cost just $7.99 back in 2021.
\nStill, even at the higher price point, Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips are a bargain compared to the Nestl\u00e9 chocolate chips also carried by Costco. Those sell for $16.99 for the same 3.4-pound bag.

Why Costco discontinues products members love
\nThe reason the loss of Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips hit so hard is that they offered the combination Costco members commonly seek out \u2014 quality and value.\u00a0
\n\u201cKirkland is an extension of the value promise Costco extends to customers,\u201d retail expert Jennifer Bartashus told Retail Wire.
\n\u201cKirkland has always been managed as a full-scale brand in its own right, and not as a \u2018replacement.\u2019 This attitude makes a difference with how consumers embrace the products.\u201d
\nBut Costco didn\u2019t pull those chips because customers didn\u2019t want the product. Rather, rising cocoa prices made it difficult for Costco to continue selling the item at a price that made sense.
\nThat\u2019s an important part of understanding Costco\u2019s business model.
\nCostco wants members to believe they\u2019re getting exceptional value. And sometimes, that means pulling a product when costs rise too much, instead of simply passing the entire increase along to shoppers.
\nThe result, however, can be frustrating for members.\u00a0
\nCostco\u2019s rotating inventory is part of what makes shopping there interesting, but it also means a product you\u2019ve relied on for years can suddenly vanish.
\nStill, it\u2019s a trade-off Costco members are clearly willing to accept.
\nThe company boasted a 92.2% renewal rate for U.S. and Canadian memberships during its most recent quarter, which means shoppers are able to look past the disappointment of discontinued products and focus on the bigger picture.
